AEHS FOUNDATION SURVEY OF STATES'
CLEANUP STANDARDS FOR HYDROCARBON-CONTAMINATED
GROUNDWATER AND SOIL

Welcome to the Association for Environmental Health and Sciences Foundation's 14th survey of states' cleanup standards for hydrocarbon-contaminated soils and groundwater.  We began the survey in 1990 in response to the EPA's final rules for regulating underground storage tanks.  The survey was conducted on an annual basis from 1990 until 2001, and again in 2003. Over the past nine years, the surveys have continued to be a meaningful tool for environmental professionals concerned with hydrocarbon contaminated groundwater and soils. Due to the frequent requests we received for updated information, AEHS has revived the survey for 2012.

In past surveys, regulators from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia contributed their most recent cleanup standards for soil and groundwater. For the 2012 survey, AEHS again reached out to every state for their most recent data. While the majority of states enthusiastically participated, there are still a few states that have yet to submit their current standards. As we to receive new information, AEHS will update the 2012 survey to reflect these updates.  The programs of each state tend to differ and therefore the format of each set of information can be different.  It should also be noted that the survey was completed in August 2012 and standards could change as early as the beginning of 2013; we recommend contacting the state before citing this information. Select states, such as Connecticut and California, have standards that were unable to conform to the AEHS Foundation table template. Contact information for these states has been provided.

The AEHS Foundation would like to thank all of the state contacts for their time and effort in helping to complete this survey.  This project is made possible by funding provided by the American Petroleum Institute.

As one of the many benefits AEHS offers its members, access to this survey is available free of charge. ISEF members and state regulators are also offered this advantage. Members and state regulators, please contact Brenna@aehsfoundation.org for access.
